Knurling

Form knurling is a process in which, usually on a lathe, relief textures are imprinted on the surface of a rotating cylindrical workpiece by cold plastic deformation of the material. This improves grip, facilitates clamping, creates interference fits, or simply for aesthetics. Form knurling wheels are used, which can be made of HSS or carbide for machining materials with high resistance to deformation, such as brass and similar materials. For high-precision, high-quality knurling or on thin-walled components, especially on brittle and difficult-to-machine materials or plastics, chip-removal knurling wheels can be used. Both types of knurling wheels can be coated with suitable coatings to improve strength, durability, and performance, even on certain types of materials: stainless steel, ferrous metal, and non-ferrous metal.
